#2 The Serendipity Gown

24 Oct

I get by with a little help from my friends

This was the second gown I made.  The main lycra was on sale and I loved it, so I grabbed it shortly after the blue dress was finished. It sat for a long time, because who needs 2 ballgowns, right?  A friend had given me boxes of old sewing stuff and after many months, I opened them up only to find pink chiffon underskirts already made.  They matched the main fabric so perfectly, it was hard to believe!

The stretch lace was ordered online and the big applique came from Dressew.  After I asked on Pattern Review  http://sewing.patternreview.com how to find matching organza, a PR friend who lives up-island volunteered the sparkly piece that became the float.

The bodice of this dress is a Kwik Sew Actionwear book leotard and the bottom is a Kwik Sew 8 gore skirt. I lengthened and flared out the gore pattern to get the fullness I wanted.  The lace overlay was a challenge!  I took a pattern for a top with a draped neckline and played with shapes until I got one I liked.  The sleeves were a pattern piece for a basic long sleeve.  I taped what would have been the underarm seam together and then sliced it open on the top of the arm.
