One of the funner days – essential construction

15 Aug

Take your pile of cut pieces, which looks awfully small piled on the living room floor:

the crinolines aren’t cut but honestly, they would appear even smaller.

Then dig in and start sewing!  I started at about 8 am, worked essentially a full work day, and in addition to putting the basic gown together, also planned, adjusted the pattern pieces and cut the inner dress.  The piecing of the top was quite painstaking because I wanted the sweetheart neckline to look good.  It is in no way perfect, but does look very nice.
Et voila!

I have ordered some of these in “mauve” that I hope will look really nice.  Once they arrive I can order crystals and start looking at the finished product, but in the meantime it is time to cut out crinolines.  And I think it will be done in the basement.  It is cooking in here!

I think it looks pretty just as a basic dress. Some spangly swirls or starbursts on hem of the skirt and it could almost be a ginger rogers dress.

It does look great already, which is so gratifying. I always remind myself that in Ginger’s day they didn’t have lycra, so sewing that stuff that fit to a “t” and was still flexible enough to dance in was a real sewing coup. That is probably why so much was sewn on the bias.
